Moving Forward: Progress with Solar Powered Shop

Back in September of 2023, I applied for a mini grant sponsored by Intuit for eco based projects initiated by small businesses. The mini grant was for $1,000 which would be a huge boost for a business such as mine. The California Green Business Network (CAGBN) partnered with Intuit, a financial software company to launch a mini grant program financially supporting small businesses in sustainability projects beyond Green Business Certification. By supporting small businesses in adopting environmentally friendly measures, the program aimed to promote sustainability while also benefiting businesses through cost savings and increased efficiency.

In October, I was notified that I had been selected as a recipient of the above grant. I had to submit my plans for the use of the funds which was to build out an alternative energy system using solar to power the shop and the equipment used to print as a way to lower the carbon footprint my shop produces. Using solar is attractive to me because it is a renewable energy source as opposed to fossil fuels.

My vision for the shop to be solar powered actually came about a few years back around 2020, but with limited monetary resources in addition to limited knowledge as to how to go about doing so, I didn’t put too much focus on it. I however still maintained a priority on using eco friendly inks and other practices. By the time this grant opportunity came around, I had built up some knowledge of solar energy and its benefits. At the same time, I begun researching portable solar systems and panels. Why portable? Because I do not own the property my shop is located at, and I also wanted the flexibility to move and take down the panels at any time and point without potential repercussions from the property owner. This also played into why I did not look at the route of “free solar installs” or getting locked into a contract.

In my research I came upon the Ecoflow line of products and settled on that after reading reviews and the capabilities it offered. With the grant monies, I was able to purchase the Delta 2 2700W generator with a 220W bi-facial solar panel. Having it for a few weeks now, I have conducted numerous tests and charging scenarios to find the most efficient ways to use it in everyday processes. On sunny days, I can charge the generator to a full 100% in about 6hrs. It also allows for charging and use simultaneously, a big plus. I have yet to calculate how much savings if any I have achieved by not using grid power as much. I will probably update in a later blog.

Looking forward, I already have plans to expand on the battery capacity as well as add an additional panel or two. The goal is to power the entirety of my 300sq foot space of creativity with the sun. This grant afforded me the ability to put my goal from thought to reality and I am super grateful to have been chosen and make my community proud.
